Magnetically limited X-ray filaments in young SNR

چکیده

We discuss the damping of strong magnetic turbulence downstream of the forward shock of young supernova remnants (SNR). We find that strong magnetic fields, that have been produced by the streaming instability in the upstream region of the shock, or by other kinetic instabilities at the shock, will be efficiently reduced, so the region of enhanced magnetic field strength would typically have a thickness of the order ld = (10 16 − 10) cm. The non-thermal X-ray filaments observed in young SNR are thus likely limited by the magnetic field and not by the energy losses of the radiating electrons. Consequently the thickness of the filaments would not be a measure of the magnetic field strength and claims of efficient cosmic-ray acceleration on account of a run-away streaming instability appear premature. The origin of non-thermal X-ray filaments and TeV emission in young SNRs

At the early, ejecta dominated, stage of supernova remnant (SNR) expansion a fraction of the swept-up circumstellar magnetic field is dynamically compressed to approximate equipartition at the contact discontinuity separating the SN progenitor’s wind (or the ISM) and the ejecta. We propose that the thin non-thermal X-ray filaments observed by the Chandra satellite in several young SNRs are asso...

Fast Variability of Nonthermal X-ray Emission in Cassiopeia A: Probing Electron Acceleration in Reverse-shocked Ejecta

Recent discovery of the year-scale variability in the synchrotron X-ray emission of the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7−3946 has initiated our study of multi-epoch X-ray images and spectra of the young SNR Cassiopeia A based on the Chandra archive data taken in 2000, 2002, and 2004. We have found year-scale time variations in the X-ray intensity for a number of X-ray filaments or knots assoc...

Postshock turbulence and diffusive shock acceleration in young supernova remnants

Context. Thin X-ray filaments are observed in the vicinity of young supernova remnants (SNR) blast waves. Identifying processes involved in the creation of such filaments would provide a direct insight of particle acceleration occurring within SNR, in particular regarding the cosmic ray yield issue. Aims. The present article investigates magnetic amplification in the upstream medium of SNR blas...

Supernova Remnants in the Magellanic Clouds IV: X-ray Emission from the Largest SNR in the LMC

We present the first X-ray detection of SNR 0450−70.9, the largest known supernova remnant (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. To study the physical conditions of this SNR, we have obtained XMM-Newton X-ray observations, optical images and high-dispersion spectra, and radio continuum maps. Optical images of SNR 0450−70.9 show a large, irregular elliptical shell with bright filaments along the ...

The Structure of the Oxygen-rich Supernova Remnant G292.0+1.8 from Chandra X-ray Images: Shocked Ejecta and Circumstellar Medium

We present results from the observation of the young Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G292.0+1.8 with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. In the 0.3 − 8 keV band, the high resolution ACIS images reveal a complex morphology consisting of knots and filaments, as well as the blast wave around the periphery of the SNR. We present equivalent width (EW...
